The Marsa local council is worried that incomplete roadworks near the parish church might ruin this year’s village feast.

The council is appealing to the authorities to ensure work on Patri Feliċjan Bilocca Street will be finished before the Holy Trinity feast celebrations begin on May 28.

It said the village starts gearing up for its feast preparations from the first week of May. However, Patri Feliċjan Bilocca Street has been dug up and left in that state.

Work on this street forms part of a roadworks project stretching from the front of the parish church down to December 13 Road.

The local council said the original deadline had been set for the end of March, but following discussions with Transport Malta, it was moved to May 16.

While the dug-up area in front of the church has been resurfaced temporarily, the council is worried that work on Patri Feliċjan Bilocca Street will not be ready in time, which means there would be no space to set up food stalls.

But TM reassured that the latest mid-May deadline would be kept after it had been “amicably brought forward” from the end of May. The contractor will be cleaning the area and laying tarmac as the base course, while the final asphalting will be carried out after the feast.

The transport authority said the work was delayed because the scale of the project grew significantly after it kicked off. Adverse weather conditions caused additional delays because the area is prone to flooding, an issue which has been addressed in this project.

Also, requests by “various communities” to limit work before the Christmas period delayed the start of the roadwork, it added.
