Allow me to express my dismay on reading Migrant Dinghy Lands On Beach (May 8) as evidently our national security has again proved to be zilch.

This is not the first time that boats loaded with “illegal immigrants” have reached our shores undetected by our national security forces, despite the much acclaimed upgrading investments in our security forces in the form of new patrol boats and new long range airplanes etc. costing millions of euros of taxpayers’ money.

I believe that many readers recall that during the debated Simshar search and rescue saga our national security forces claimed that they had the appropriate equipment to detect a can of “coke” on high waters. Nevertheless, the facts as to who actually found and rescued the sole survivor of that sad event speaks volumes.

Given that repeatedly, boatloads of illegal/irregular immigrants land on our shores undetected by our security forces, I wonder whether our national security forces are perhaps “obsessed” looking for cans of coke instead of being on the lookout for illegal human trafficking.

Having said this, I firmly believe that Malta should continue to extend civil humane hospitality to these suffering human beings.
