An Englishman who left Malta after paying for a shopping spree with cheques that later bounced was yesterday hauled back to the island and admitted defrauding a number of shops.
Alexander Hutchinson, 36, from Hastings, Sussex, spent €14,782 in two days.
His purchases included €8,380 worth of items from Classic Jewellers, €4,900 from Sterling Jewellers, €341 from Solaris, €394 at Hugo’s Lounge and some €766 from Go Mobile.
He then left the island with no money in his account.
A European Arrest Warrant was issued and he was brought back to face fraud charges.
His lawyer Stefano Filletti said he had paid all the money back and described the Mr Hutchinson’s actions as “foolish and rash”.
Magistrate Giovanni Grixti gave the man a two-year jail sentence, suspended for two years.
