An Englishman was this morning jailed for two years suspended for another two after he admitted to defrauding a number of shops of €15,000.

He has since paid all the money back.

Alexander Hutchinson, 36, from Hastings, Sussex, spent €14,782 in two days - €8,380 at Classic Jewellers in Valletta, €4,900 at Sterling Jewellers, also in Valletta, €341 at Solaris sunglasses shop, €394 at Hugo's Lounge in Paceville, and some €766 at Go Mobile's outlet in Bay Street, St Julian's.

He left the island and his cheques bounced.

A European Arrest Warrant was issued and he was brought to Malta to face charges of defrauding the companies.
