A fist fight developed in a court corridor this afternoon between two girls and two boys who had allegedly assaulted them in Hamrun in January because they are lesbians.

Policemen rushed to the scene of the fight which also involved a 35-year old woman who also stands accused of assaulting the girls and another woman related to the two boys.

The fight broke out after the continuation of the hearing, during which evidence was given by one of the boys and by the 35-year-old woman.

People on the scene said the commotion developed suddenly outside the court room. A woman was seen grabbing one of the girls by her hair and then the boys also got involved with blows being traded. One of the girls' spectacles was broken and shoes went flying.

Policemen and court employees intervened after about 30 seconds and had some difficulty in separating those involved. No was seriously injured.

During the hearing, the 15-year-old boy said that on the day of the incident there had been some five girls dancing under a gazebo. At one point they began showing their bottoms in an insulting way at the boys who were in an overlying balcony. He told one of the girls Qeghdin sew. They then traded insults and, he said, one of the girls challenged him to a fight and he went down to the gazeebo. He said both girls started kicking him and hitting him. He was hit in the groin and as he bent forward he hit one of the girls on her face with his head.

When asked by lawyer Cedric Mifsud, who is appearing for the girls, why he had gone down to fight, the boy asked him back - 'So if somebody challenges you, don't you fight?'

He said the 35-year-old woman who was with the boys then came down and tried to separate them and dragged him backt ot he house.

Testifying, the woman said she was at home and saw the girls dancing. She then heard the girls and the boys exhcnaging insults and one of the girls challenging for a fight.

The case continues.
