A couple exchange a peck on the lips as they sit in the garden of the old people’s home where they live.
Beside them is a Rediffusion, a cable radio set of the days gone by that reminds them of their younger days.
This is a moment captured in one in a series of photographs featuring residents of Care Malta’s homes for the elderly.
The photos were taken in an activity organised in conjunction with The Malta Photographic Society to mark the European Year of Active Ageing.
Residents from Care Malta’s homes were invited to participate in the photoshoot and asked to bring memorabilia to feature in the pictures.
Care Malta, which runs seven homes, strives to maximise older people’s functional capacity and independence that is essential in enhancing their quality of life.
“We usually tend to disregard the fact that a growing number of older people are in good health, have valuable skills and experience and are willing to make a significant contribution to society.
“Encouraging people to remain active as they grow older and to continue contributing to society is imperative in tackling the challenges of demographic ageing,” a company spokesman said.
The photos will form part of an exhibition held in conjunction with an event in September when Malta will be hosting the fourth conference organised by the European Association for Homes and Services for the Ageing.
During the conference, themed Active Ageing – The Challenge for Providers, speakers from different parts of Europe will provide insight into best practice and innovations in housing, care and services.
