A half-day seminar entitled ‘Adopting new technologies for the control of the trans-boundary maritime space – A challenge for the shelf area of the Maltese Islands and southern Sicily’ will be held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana, on May 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The seminar will highlight the use of high frequency radars to monitor in real-time weather and sea surface conditions and detect environmental hazards in the sea between Malta and Sicily.

The seminar is being held in conjunction with the third meeting of the Calypso project on this topic. The project, which is partly financed by the EU under the Italia-Malta 2007-2013 Operational Programme, is led by the University.

The other partners include Transport Malta, the Civil Protection Department, the Armed Forces of Malta, ARPA Sicilia, IAMC-CNR Capo Granitola, Università degli Studi di Palermo and Università di Catania.

For details about the project and to attend the seminar visit www.capemalta.net/calypso or contact Aldo Drago on e-mail aldo.drago@um.edu.mt.
