Albert Ganado and Joseph Schirò: German Malta Maps, Book Distributors Ltd, 2011. 190 pages. €29.95

The catalogue of an exhibition organised by the Malta Map Society in collaboration with Heritage Malta has been published.

German Malta Maps was published on the occasion of a symposium of the International Map Collectors’ Society.

The authors are on the executive committee of the MMS and were the curators of the exhibition at the Malta Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa last year.

The 78 exhibited maps and engravings came from the Albert Ganado Malta Map Collection and from the private collections of some members of the MMS.

The catalogue comprises a foreword, acknowledgments, a description of Old German Malta Maps by Ganado, followed by a brief, but scholarly presentation of the exhibited maps and related engravings.

These are presented in alphabetical order of the person to whom the maps are attributed. The information on these uncommon maps, some scarce, is referenced.

The catalogue is printed on high quality glossy paper. There are two appendices. One provides the text attached to the fourth state of Matthäus Seuter’s map of Malta in German and English.

The other appendix illustrates the special cancellation stamp of Malta Post that commemorates the IMCoS Symposium and some maps of Malta on stamps.
