People in need of minor emergency consultations during weekends can from today seek assistance at the private St James hospitals in Żabbar or Sliema – free of charge.

Health Minister Joseph Cassar yesterday launched a service designed to ease the pressure on Mater Dei Hospital over the weekends, when the number of people going to the emergency department grows.

Dr Cassar said this agreement showed the government’s commitment to a free health service and its collaboration with the private sector.

The emergency services at St James will be available between Fridays at 7 p.m. and Mondays at 7 a.m.

However, pregnant women, children and those suffering from grievous injuries should seek assistance at Mater Dei.

Patients still need to be referred to St James by a doctor and they need to take their ID or European Health Insurance card with them.

People should also call on 2329 9999 before heading to St James, to check whether they can receive the treatment they require.
