EURO SONG: A group of Polish folk-singing grandmothers on Wednesday won the race to sing Poland’s official team anthem for the European championships on home soil. The 18-member group ‘Jarzebina’ – Polish for rowanberry – swept aside established oppo-nents including established rock and pop names, a ska band and a rapper with their upbeat ethno-tune ‘Koko Euro Spoko’, which translates loosely as ‘Clucking Cool Euro’.

GARDE: Lyon manager Remi Garde says he has been offered an extension to his contract which ends this month by club president Jean-Michel Aulas. Garde, who took over from Claude Puel in June, 2011, confirmed yesterday: “Yes I’ve met the president, and it went very well, he officially made me a proposition to stay on.”

POLAND: Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland announced their 26-man squad for the tournament, with manager Franciszek Smuda sticking to his pledge not to pull any big surprises. The only new name on Smuda’s list was the uncapped 19-year-old Legia Warsaw midfielder Rafal Wolski while Artur Sobiech, of German club Hanover 96 was recalled to the squad two years after making his debut and which yielded just three caps.

RANGERS: The saga over the future of ailing Scottish giants Rangers inched closer to resolution yesterday after US businessman Bill Miller was named as the preferred bidder by the club’s administrators. Miller was battling a rival bid by the Blue Knights consortium but is now in pole position to secure a takeover.

BENTO: Portugal coach Paulo Bento has extended his deal until 2014. Bento, who as a club coach guided Sporting Lisbon to two Portuguese Cups, took over from Carlos Queiroz as coach of the Seleccao in September 2010.
