The government has reached an agreement with St James Capua Hospital that will allow people suffering minor emergencies to use the emergency units of Capua St James hospitals in Zabbar or Sliema during weekends.

The agreement was announced by Health Minister Joe Cassar.

He said the purpose of the deal is to ease the pressure on the emergency department of Mater Dei Hospital when it is at its highest.

The services at St James will be available free of charge from Fridays at 7 p.m. to Mondays at 7 a.m.

Mater Dei will continue to treat all cases.

Dr Cassar said the same system used at Mater Dei will be used at St James and people suffering medical conditions should be referred by their doctors. Pregnant women and children should go directly to Mater Dei.
