Seventeen girls from GymStars Gymnastics Club recently travelled to the UK to take part in a competition hosted by the Dave Gymnastics Academy in Colchester.
The Maltese team returned with an impressive haul of medals – 21 – and five overall titles in different categories.
The competition was based on the National Development Programme of British Gymnastics under the tutelage of technical director Adrian Stan, a Romanian coach.
Mia Vickery showed she is well geared for the Island Games in Sardinia in May, where she will be joined by Adreanna Zammit and Kirsty Caruana, following a series of podium finishes in bars, floor and vault in Colchester.
Sana Grillo also did well in her age-group (12 years) while Mea Farrugia, seven, was prominent in her category along with Cora Caruana.
On her part, Daphne Marie Cassar made history, becoming the first Gozitan gymnast at the club to compete for Malta outside our shores.
The GymStars girls in the UK were led by coaches Sandra Borg and Francesca Borg.
Meanwhile, GymStars are planning to host another international competition in summer, probably with the biggest participation ever.
