New US ambassador-designate to Malta Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley presented her diplomatic credentials to President George Abela this morning - and did so using the Maltese language.

The ceremony was held at the Palace in Valletta.

As soon as she presented the credentials, President George Abela replied in Maltese thanking her for using the Maltese language.

Commenting on her role as  Ambassador to Malta, Ms Abercrombie-Winstanley in a statement issued through the embassy said:   “The strong ties between our two countries are much valued.  For over two hundred years we have supported each other in times of trial and triumph.  During my assignment here, I hope to be instrumental in reaffirming the strong partnership and friendship between our countries as we work together on issues that affect regional and global stability and human rights, such as supporting the new Democracies in North Africa, preventing the spread of illicit materials, enforcing international sanctions, and preventing the trafficking in persons.  Malta has been a strong and valued partner on these efforts, and as President Obama’s representative in Malta, I look forward to working closely with the Maltese Government on these and many other issues of mutual interest.”
