The Labour party has expressed its appreciation to all those involved in the record haul of 140 kilos of cocaine at the Freeport on Monday.

The drugs, which came on a ship from Egypt, was hidden in two olive presses stored in a container that was destined for Lebanon. Tests revealed the cocaine was 70 per cent pure.

PL spokesman Michael Falzon said that such news made all the Maltese proud of their forces of law and order.

The police, customs officials and army personnel involved in the delicate operation deserved a special mention as they had managed to save so many lives.

The government's delay in giving police officers the right to union membership, Dr Falzon said, showed its lack of appreciation for police work. The army were also being denied this right, he said.
