Pietro Ghedin will officially take over as Malta coach this Thursday, MFA President Norman Darmanin Demajo said this afternoon.

Ghedin, who was in charge of the national team back in the 1990s, has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the MFA taking him through to the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Ghedin, who coached the Italy women's team before accepting the MFA proposal, met the members of the Malta Executive Committee who ratified his appointment.

The MFA president said that Ghedin has been released from his contract with the FIGC a month in advance. Ghedin's first task will be to prepare the national squad for upcoming friendlies, both away, against Luxembourg on June 2 and San Marino on August 14.

The former Lazio defender succeeds John Buttigieg who was dismissed by the MFA last October.
