Athleta retain basketball title

Athleta A-Z Electronics held on to their status as the top basketball team in the country after retaining the MSV Life National League title with a commanding 87-54 win over Depiro Mtarfa in the third match of the final play-off series. Leading 2-0 in the best-of-five final, Joe Galea’s team came into yesterday’s match determined to complete their title success. Athleta were in control from the outset, building a 14-point advantage at the interval, 44-30. Depiro’s reaction never materialised and Athleta cantered home for a comfortable victory to win their ninth national title. Athleta’s Derek Schembri was the game’s top scorer with 22 points.
