Most approaches to desktop virtualisation, such as server-hosted VDI, require major infrastructure investments, cause challenges with mobility and end-user performance, and create a host of additional change management issues. That’s because approaches like server-hosted VDI execute the desktop workload on a server, which increases the requirements for server infrastructure and expensive storage arrays. It also calls for major network investments because the desktops are no longer running locally, so network bandwidth is required to connect the remote desktop to the user. And of course, the desktop is unavailable if a network connection is not present.

Virtual Computer won an award at the 2011 VMworld show for demonstrating a different approach to desktop virtualisation. This approach still virtualises the desktops and centralises the management, but the biggest difference is that theexecution is handled locally on end-user devices. By taking advantage of localcompute power, Virtual Computer is able to dramatically reduce server, storage, and network costs while increasingperformance and mobility. And because execution is local, end users get a native PC experience.

Ian Song, senior research analyst for IDC’s Enterprise Virtualisation Software practice, says: “Based on the new capabilities Virtual Computer has launched in NxTop 4, their global distribution and technology collaboration agreement with major PC suppliers, and their strong customer traction, we see Virtual Computer as a major player in the distributed desktop virtualisation space.”

Gabe Knuth, editor for Search Virtual Desktop, says, “It’s hard to give Virtual Computer enough credit for what they’ve done. By far, they have the most mature piece of client-side virtualisation software on the market.”

Virtual Computer already has hundreds of customers benefiting from this software including pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers and financial institutions.
