Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday launched a framework for a sustainable mobility plan, which aims for sustainable planning and improved quality of life for residents.

Malta was characterised by too much traffic, too much pollution and lack of space for pedestrians, AD chairman Michael Briguglio told a news conference.

A sustainable transport policy would ensure safe speed limits and proper access to children, the elderly, people with a disability and cyclists.

Public transport should be more accessible to reduce dependency on cars, he said.

The plan’s co-author Ralph Cassar welcomed Transport Malta’s recognition of a 30kph speed limit in residential areas in “at least” some streets.

AD hopes the report will inspire residents, decision-makers and organisations to join forces and tackle the problems caused by heavy traffic on the streets.

It is being sent to Transport Malta and local councils.
