Police are not ruling out the possibility that a third, unidentified person could have been with the lawyer found dead at Baħar Ic-Ċagħaq on Thursday.

The exact cause of death of Margaret Mifsud, 31, remains a mystery because the autopsy results were deemed to be inconclusive and the police are waiting for further test results.

Not long after the discovery of the body, the police arrested Dr Mifsud’s former partner and the father of her two children, Libyan national Nizar El Gadi.

The Sunday Times has learned that he is receiving care in hospital after being questioned by the police.

Last month Dr Mifsud had reported Mr El Gadi to police, accusing him of trying to strangle her.

The sources have not ruled out that another person may hold the key to the mysterious death and could still be at large.

No handbag was found in the car, even though colleagues said she carried a bag during a farewell party the night before.

An autopsy on the lawyer on Friday indicated she might not have died of natural causes as initially thought. Dr Mifsud’s mother, Tessie, insisted her daughter was a “very healthy woman” who “lived for her children”.

Lawyer death mystery

Dr Mifsud gave a colleague a lift home following a farewell party in Xemxija on Wednesday night.

After dropping her off at about 11.30 p.m. Dr Mifsud was meant to return to Birkirkara where she lived with her parents and two daughters.

The following morning her mother reported her missing because she had not come home.

Her body was discovered at about 2 p.m. the next day during a routine police patrol.

Her car was parked between some bushes in a dirt road in Baħar Iċ-Ċagħaq in front of the sea and was clearly visible from the Coast Road.

Dr Mifsud was sitting in the driver’s seat and was fully clothed. There were no signs of violence.
