The team of four bowlers currently representing Malta at the 15th Mediterranean Championships being held in San Marino, have all picked up medals in yesterday’s second day of play, which consisted of the ladies’ and men’s doubles events.
In the morning session, Mark Spiteri and Justin Caruana Scicluna fought their way through a very tough field over six games to claim the bronze medal position with a very good team total of 2,417.
Greek pair, George Stefanidis and Evengelos Krizinis took gold on 2,514 ahead of Gaetan Maveroux and Christophe Hachin, of France, 2,491.
Spiteri and Camilleri both put in much-improved individuals compared to those in Wednes-day’s singles event, which saw Spiteri place 16th among a total field of 26 men, while Caruana Scicluna finished down in 24th.
Sue Abela and Melissa Swift went one better than their male counterparts, picking up a silver medal with an excellent 2,398 team series yesterday.
They were second only to Ebru Ozogluuntur and Adile Michajlow, of Turkey, on 2,492. Greece took third place with a 2,325 tally from Martha Karatzoula and Alexandra Zorba.
In the singles, Abela managed a sixth place from 24 female participants, while Swift finished a respectable 16th.
Play continues today, with the mixed doubles event, followed by the four-member teams.
