A 27-year-old man from Hamrun was this morning jailed 12 months for theft.

Stephen Catania pleaded guilty to stealing the purse of an elderly woman in Hamrun yesterday at 1.30 p.m.

He also admitted to breaching the conditions of a suspended jail term and relapsing.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli said that while this was a case of simple theft, it had been carried out on an elderly woman and the accused had relapsed.

She jailed Mr Catania six months for this theft and brought into effect a previous jail term of six months suspended to two years. The suspended jail term had also been for theft.
