Anti-abortion group Gift of Life will be stepping up its campaign against embryo freezing as Parliament prepares to discuss a draft law to regulate IVF.

The finalised draft has not yet been made public or presented to MPs and has still be approved by Cabinet and discussed within the Nationalist Party’s parliamentary group.

The vociferous pro-life NGO said it was confident that most MPs were eager to pass a law to regulate the practice of IVF, which respects “human life from conception”.

It said: “Both political parties have shown a willingness to regulate the current state of affairs. Attempts to promote embryo freezing, which, it is claimed, will facilitate success rates of the treatment, however, remain a cause for serious concern.

“Our objections to this have already been made amply clear. Embryo freezing can never be considered to be an acceptable practice, more so with the advent of female egg freezing (oocyte vitrification).”

The NGO stressed that IVF treatment could be provided in Malta without the need for excess or spare embryos.

Gift of Life said its campaign would be conducted mostly through social media but also through a series of pro-life adverts on news portals, such as timesofmalta.com.

A series of pro-life adverts would also be aired on radio stations.
