Updated: Migrants escape from detention centre

Members of the Detention Service and the police are involved in a search following the escape of two migrants from Hal Far detention centre last night.

Informed sources said the two men, both Nigerians had been transferred to Hal Far from Safi detention centre yesterday to be interviewed ahead of their deportation since their application for refugee status had been refused.

The sources said there was a 'commotion' during he transfer from Safi to Hal Far.

It is understood that three migrants tried to escape from Hal Far but one was caught immediately by the Detention Service officers.

The planned deportation of the Nigerians follows the deportation of 35 migrants to Ghana last week.

Coincidentally, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici is today due to visit the nearby Hal Far Open Centre, where tents are being replaced with 100 pre-fabricated homes.

Colin Stanley - They should and HAVE A RIGHT to go where their natural resources go, that
is Britain, France and allover Europe surely not Malta. Malta cariies this burden as
as a result of this ruthless Neo Colonialism practiced by these countries. SHAME ON ALL
THESE COUNTRIES !

Colin Stanley - Agree they are slaves in their own country victims of the British, American, French and
the western white world, who extract their natural resources like oil, uranium, diamonds, rubber,
cobalt, iron ore etc., leaving behind an environmental disaster, poverty, disease, ignorance and
terror. The WHITE western world countries still practice slavery in another way. Africa is the
richest continent in the world, and yet it is the poorest, because the interest of the NEO COLONIALISTS
remain the same like 200 years and still suck the blood of these people till the last drop. SHAME !

Gustan, why not invite your Scandinavian brothers and sisters to take all these illegal migrants who don't even want to be in Malta.

Very true indeed!

Malta had one brilliant Alfred Sant. Tragically, he was jeered at, mocked, had sarcasm thrown at him... He was a man who knew what he was talking about unlike those peasants who came after him to rule this desperate nation. Alas, Sant was too brilliant for such a hopeless nation. He was someone with a sheer expertise in world politics and economics (apart from being a fantastic writer). Had Vaclav Havel been born in Malta not in the refined Czech Republic, he would have experienced the same fate as Sant.

@ T. Gauci; The problem is because of culture, not skin. These people have different cultures and are difficult to integrate. We have same problem with some East European like Rumanians. Culture and background are difficult to eradicate and integrate.

@ A.MIcallef,

Try and talk with a bit of common sense.
Any non EU citizen passing through our airport, comes with a valid passport and if needed,a visa.which is valid for a certain period of time.

Should they wish to extend their stay on the island, and, before their visa expires, they go to the immigration office in Floriana, pay a fee and if everything is in order they get their extension.

Should they, in the meantime wish to work, they or their employers apply for a work permit.

If they do not get a work permit, and are caught working, they are taken to court, their employers are heavily fined, and they themselves are deported.

So now, instead of you ranting about any imaginary racism, Don,t you agree that even Africans should act, and be treated the same as the rest of the human race.

A. MICALLEF

Apr 19th 2012, 14:28

S.KULODROVIC - I am refering to the non EU citizens who overstay their Visa and stay
and work illegally in Malta not the ones who manage to get an extension of the Visa. We
have many thousands of them from ex.Jugoslavia etc., etc. Having a passaport does
not mean you can enter a country stay there and work illegally. If we allow these
non EU citizens why not allow the ones from Africa ?? YEARS AGO THE MALTESE
GAVE A HOME AND A COUNTRY TO THE KULODROVIC FAMILY because trhey were
escaping from war, so now WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MALTESE
GIVING A TEMPORARY HOME TO THESE POOR BLACK AFRICANS ??

You have to thank god that we have a clear country not like them. If we have the same problems like them we do the same thing. These people we have to save them not send them back immediately because they are humane being like use. My friend if you past 7 days on a boat with out food & drink you will not talk like this the mentally of Maltese .

Charles W. Sammut

Apr 19th 2012, 09:42

@ Debbie Schembri

Transferring the problem from Nigeria to Malta will not solve anything. Nigeria is one of the richest countries in Africa with vast oil reserves. They have to sort out their own problems and not create new problems for us here. That is what every European country did, what we did. Why cannot these people sort themselves out?

It is misplaced and misguided charity to let them come and stay here. They do not belong here or in Europe. So much so that no other EU country want to take them off us. Do not believe those NGOs who are raking in money and avoiding income tax on the pretext of providing a 'service' to these illegals.

The illegal immigrants are locked up because they entered illegally.

The locals are struggling to make ends meet and yet, we are FORCED to keep foreign people in our midst whether we like it or not. We can't send them to Libya, we can't send them to Europe, all we can do is to risk our lives in saving them, feed them, clothe them and shelter them. If we don't give them five star treatment then our Northern 'brothers' criticize us, if anyone complains then he's branded a racist. Now go on and tell us who are the real victims in this story.

T. Mifsud
The facts are that in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S.A. not to mention other countries the like of South America have been invaded by emigration, once these so called emigrants OUTNUMER the locals the locals disappear in tin air and become second class citizens.

One of these new arrivals is said to have requested: ''if we let our wives come millions are ready and willing to cross over''.

We as a small nation we tread in dangerous territory!

I agree with you too Mr Micallef but i am not in agreement with Anthony Arpa

. We have to save this people not send them back immediately. If we spend 7 days on the boat without drink & food like them we will not talk like this. Most of Maltese people there mind is to close get up Maltese open your mind for these people we always tell stupid things about them.

Thanks

They were saved from the rough seas because they decided to take their ILLEGAL journey at their OWN RISK. People had to risk their lives to save these irresponsible ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

They were locked up because they came here ILLEGALLY! They were going to be deported and instead of following the legal procedure they instead escaped.

So no, i do not feel sorry in the least for them and i hope they are caught as soon as possible, deported and I hope the Nigerian authorities are informed that these individuals should be locked up for breaking the law here.

The simple truth is that even non-EU citizens who are not black are repatriated - probably more so than African migrants. It just makes no news that a Serbian, Albanian or whatever is repatriated, so nobody knows about it.

I personally know of a case, for example where a Serbian man illegally residing in Malta was only weeks away from marrying a Maltese resident and he was deported anyway. In this case his fiancee had to incur the not inconsiderable cost of travelling to his country and marrying there as quickly as possible and without her family.
