Mepa has granted a permit for an extension to a fireworks factory at the outskirts of Mgarr (Malta).

The application for the development permit had drawn concerns from  the members of the Hagrat Apartments Residents' Association who warned of potential danger.

However the architect, Philip Mifsud, insisted that the development would actually make the fireworks factory safer.

The application was for the modernisation of the existing fireworks factory by the addition of a workshop, a room for the mixing of black powder and two compounding rooms. The development will also  include an emergency access passageway and the sanctioning of structures to be used as a changing room and store for paper/cardboard.

A rubble wall is to be erected along part of the periphery.
