Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr will visit Malta this week, on his first trip to Europe as foreign minister, Australian media has reported.

Senator Carr said Australia and Malta had a long history of co-operation.

"As premier of New South Wales, I developed a strong relationship with the Maltese community whose members have contributed a great deal to Australian society," he said in a statement.

Senator Carr will meet Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg.
