The GWU has deplored attacks taking place on elderly people and called on the government to introduce harsher penalties for those committing such abuse.

The pensioners’ section within the General Workers Union said the penalties have not been updated for 140 years.

Not only were the elderly being held up and robbed but they were also at times beaten up in their own homes, it said.

On Sunday, an 85-year-old woman was injured after she was surprised by robbers in her home in Sta Luċija. The police said two men made off with a haul of cash and jewellery.
