I refer to the news item Dwejra Fishing Nets Spark Calls For Better Protection (April 6).
The fishing activity reported at Dwejra was in line with the existing and present regulations that restrict the deployment of trammel nets from February 15 to July 15 inside the imaginary line between the stone pillars in certain bays.
The Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs is liaising with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to devise the essential foundations for a Dwejra Marine Protected Area work plan to ensure a holistic approach that takes into account the needs of both the diving and fishing sectors.
The ministry has already conducted a strategy to collect the necessary information on the fishing activities in Dwejra. It believes that the development of a zoning scheme, based on a win-win strategy, shall fulfil the needs of all stakeholders involved and will, thus, ensure compliance among users.
