The newly restored Malta at War Museum at Couvre Porte in Vittoriosa this morning welcomed the

Duke of Gloucester, who is in Malta on an official visit to mark the 70th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta.

The museum, originally opened in 2004 along with the underlying wartime air raid shelters, has been enlarged. It focuses on the daily life in wartime Malta.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna had reached an agreement with the Vittoriosa council for the management of the shelters and support was obtained from the Malta Tourism Authority for the establishment of the museum.

The museum documents the various stages and experiences that the nation went through during the war.

Last year, the ground floor at the old Couvre Porte Barracks and the underlying air raid shelters were also entrusted to FWA under a Guardianship Deed which opened the way for the expansion of the museum.

Funding for the project was received through a €500,000 grant from the European Regional Development Fund and the government.
