Upcoming swimmer Matthew Zammit has booked his place in the 50m freestyle event at the 2012 British Championships after placing sixth in the Sheffield Premier Meet final, held recently.

Zammit, currently pursuing his studies in the UK, also succeeded in setting a new U-17 national age-group mark in the 50m free when clocking 24.24 seconds in his heat. The previous record belonged to Andrew Chetcuti.

In the final, Zammit, who swims for Plymouth Leander, covered the one-lap race in 24.48, the best time in his age-group.

In the British Champion-ships, Zammit will compete in both the open and Under-18 categories.
