Opposition leader Joseph Muscat this evening met the President of Libya's National Transitional Council Moustafa Abdul Jalil in Libya.

Dr Muscat is in Tripoli on the invitation of Libyan authorities.

During the meeting, Dr Muscat emphasised that the Labour Party was committed towards ensuring the best relations between Malta and Libya. The friendship between the two peoples would open the doors to other matters, such as business, he said.

Dr Muscat said that if there is a change in government in Malta, the new Labour government would work to strengthen relations. The PL, he said, supported the negotiations on oil which were to be embarked upon between the two countries and he hoped they would bear positive results.

President Jalil thanked the Maltese for their assistance during the Libyan crisis and said he was conscious that there had been agreement about these actions.

He said that the Libyan authorities would be ready to work with whoever was in government in Malta.

Dr Muscat is accompanied by MPs Karmenu Vella, Michael Farrugia and Noel Farrugia and PL international secretary Alex Sciberras Trigona.
