Green Day are to release a trilogy of albums over a four-month period starting later this year, they announced.

The records, to be called Uno, Dos and Tre, will go on sale in September, November and next January, and will be follow-ups to their Grammy-winning 2009 hit album 21st Century Breakdown.

The unusual one-after-the-other release schedule – which comes as bands scramble with new models for releasing their music in the internet age – is simply due to the fact that they are making lots of good music, they said.

“We are at the most prolific and creative time in our lives. This is the best music we’ve ever written, and the songs just keep coming,” the band said on their website. “Instead of making one album, we are making a three-album trilogy. Every song has the power and energy that represents Green Day on all emotional levels. We just can’t help ourselves... We are going epic ...!” they said.

The band, founded in Berkeley, California back in 1987, is due to play summer music festivals including Tokyo, Osaka and Paris in August, as well as in Germany and Italy in September.
