Malta this morning launched its activities to celebrate the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, being celebrated this year with a conference at Zejtun.

The conference, includes the participation of academics and the national ambassadors of the European Year 2012.

The activity was organised by the Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations Committee at Juventutis Domus. The Domus during its first centenary offered a solidarity between generations experience through theatrical performances and popular culture. The scope of the activity was to celebrate active ageing.

Opening the conference, Parliamentary Secretary for the Care of the Elderly Mario Galea said that notwithstanding the international ecomomic set backs, Malta continued to create more jobs and progressed to invest in several services for the elderly. These services were always on the increase to encourage more old people to remain active in their respective community and more than 10,000 members of the elderly community were still working after reaching pension age.

Mario Galea invited those present to be agents of change and strive to alter people’s stagnant mentality as far as the elderly are concerned.

The European Commission declared and designated the year 2012 as the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. The aim of the European Year (EY) is to encourage older persons become more active and participate in society, by means of healthy ageing, volunteering and formal employment.
