A crane yesterday brought down a wall and the ceiling of at least one room at the Seabank Hotel in Mellieħa where, last month, a massive structure collapsed, killing a Latvian worker.

Workers who were on site, where major renovation is under way, said that two construction workers were slightly injured, with blood visible on one of the workers’ faces.

CEO Arthur Gauci said the incident was not serious and the only injury reported was “a scratch” on one of the workers. No one was hospitalised.

Witnesses said the injured workers were given first aid and the rest of the people on site were immediately ushered to safety. The incident happened at about 12.30 p.m.

When contacted, Mr Gauci pointed out this was not a collapse like last month’s, when a structure that would have been a nightclub caved in.

Apparently, he said, the winch of a crane accidentally hit a small wall yesterday, bringing it down together with the ceiling above.

After last month’s tragedy, the area was closed off to ensure the structural safety of the other parts of the huge complex. It was reopened later after an inspection by health and safety officials.

So far, there has been no update on the magisterial and police inquiries into the incident that took place on March 7. Mr Gauci insisted that yesterday’s incident was being blown out of proportion due to the fact that it followed so soon after the first collapse. He said that such minor incidents were not uncommon on construction sites. Health and safety consultants’ AME were not available for comment yesterday. No official statement was issued.
