Malta U-17 lost 2-0 to Northern Ireland in the last match of the Malta International U-17 Tournament at the Centenary Stadium this afternoon.

After winning their opening two games, 1-0 against Liechtenstein and 2-1 against Romania, Malta went into the final day of the quadrangular event on top of the table but their hopes of winning the title were dashed by the Irish.

Josh Doherty fired Northern Ireland ahead after 13 minutes and Liam Donnelly sealed the issue with a second goal five minutes into the second half.

Northern Ireland won the tournament thanks to their better goal difference as they finished level on six points with Malta and Romania.

Romania beat Liechtenstein 4-3 in today's other game.
