A Filipino sailor who was injured on a merchant vessel was yesterday evening medically evacuated to hospital by the Armed Forces of Malta.

The AFM said in a statement the sailor was injured on the MV Cassiopeia.

The army's Rescue Coordination Centre was requested to evacuate the sailor, who was reported to have broken his leg and required medical assistance.

However, an air evacuation was not possible because of the weather so the vessel was instructed to get closer to to Marsaxlokk harbour.

An AFM rescue-launch was then sent out to bring in the injured sailor, who was transferred to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance.
