Bollards are to be installed along part of Kalkara creek, on the Vittoriosa side, after two cars fell into the shallow sea along the quay over the weekend

Paula Zahra happened to be passing by on both occasions and took photographs of the weirdly identical accidents in which no one was injured.

The vehicles were making their way along the rough, narrow road by the sea when their wheels accidentally went over the edge, causing them to fall into the shallow water on the passenger side.

The first accident took place on Good Friday, in the late morning, and involved a car driven by a woman, Ms Zahra said.

Two days later, on Easter Sunday, she could not believe her eyes when she came across the scene of a van that had just suffered the same fate.

When contacted, Kalkara mayor Michael Cohen said he did not remember ever seeing similar accidents in the area.

However, to ensure they did not repeat themselves, perhaps with worse consequences, he would be having removable bollards installed, he said.

He said the road, a dead end that leads to Vittoriosa, was used infrequently, mainly by fishermen who berthed in the area or people who parked their cars there to get into Vittoriosa from the back.

Then, of course, there was the occasional curious driver who wanted to see where the road led to, he added.
