Labour leader Joseph Muscat sees the possibility of an abortion debate as an “opportunity to convince more people to take a pro-life stand”.
However, Dr Muscat yesterday stressed that he and his party were “unequivocally against abortion”.
He was asked to react to the more equivocal reply by Dr Mintoff Bland who was asked for her position on abortion during The Sunday Times interview.
“I think it’s a big debate. I couldn’t answer it in a question,” she said.
Asked whether it was something Malta should discuss, Dr Mintoff Bland said: “Yes, we should discuss. Why not? I believe in a good discussion based on facts and balance. But with all these rights, there are responsibilities too.”
Abortion is completely prohibited in Malta, with strong political consensus against it.
