One year after Qormi etched its name in the record books for baking the largest loaf of bread, the village will try to live up to its winemaking trademark with the largest wineglass.

Last year, Qormi beat Brazil’s record with a nine-and-a-half foot long, 17-inch high loaf. This year, the village will attempt to beat Cyprus’s 3.37-metre high wineglass with a receptacle that can hold more than 5,000 bottles of wine.

Although disputable, the name Qormi is said to derive from Curmi, meaning “vine”, and has always been synonymous with winemaking. Known for their love for wine, people from Qormi have for centuries been teased about their alleged decline in soberness after midday (sa nofsinhar irġiel).

The Kumitat Festi Esterni San Ġorġ Martri, organisers of Qormi’s Spring Fest, hopes to get the village into the Guinness World Record book with a four-metre high wineglass built of 15 sheets of Perspex.

The glass – which has taken some 350 hours to build – will hold more than 4,000 litres of wine. It will be publically unveiled during the Spring Fest, a celebration of Maltese culture, arts and traditions that will light up Qormi’s Main Street between April 20 and 22.

During this festival, 35 bakers will also take part in a traditional bread and sweet competition.
