A 44-year-old woman from Balzan was briefly held hostage by a man who held a knife to her throat yesterday morning while he demanded money from a shop owner.

It was around 7.30 a.m. when a man yielding a knife, wearing a beanie on his head, entered the stationery in Triq il-Knisja l-Qadima in Birkirkara. The client was standing close to the shop entrance when the thief grabbed her and placed the knife to her throat, police said.

He demanded cash from the 30-year-old shop owner from Birkirkara, who immediately obliged. The thief made off with around €3,500 in cash and cheques. No one was injured.
