Almost 150 people have been killed in six days of tribal clashes in a remote southern desert town in Libya, the country's health minister said today.

Fatma al-Hamroush said that the fighting in Sabha had left 147 dead and 395 wounded.

She said around 180 people have been transported to the capital Tripoli for emergency treatment. Sabha is 400 miles south of Tripoli.

She said that there is an urgent need for medical supplies in Sabha and that the government has sent large amounts of emergency aid to the city.
