Dutch cyclist Patrick Kos, of Noord-Holland, set the Tour ta’ Malta alight yesterday as he not only won the second stage, a 100km road race on the San Martin circuit, but clocked the fastest time of the day, overshadowing the pro-fessional riders from the Christina Watches Onfone and Team OneCo teams.

Kos completed the race in two hours 20:48 minutes, beating his nearest rivals by more than three minutes to take the leader’s red jersey.

Italians Salvo Coco (ASD Mr Bianco) and Salvatore Casi (Omnia Sport) finished second and third respectively.

Brian Magri (Team Greens) was the only Maltese rider to earn a podium place yesterday. Magri finished third in the Masters behind the Italian duo Ettore Pierini (PMG Bike) and Angelo Curi (Curi Team.

British cyclists came out on top in the ladies’ race. Diane Lee (Mule Bar Girls) and Clare Leaver (GB Cycles) fought it out in a final sprint with Lee edging her opponent by a mere second. Rachel Armitage (London Dynamo Team) is leading the field.

In the Elite Pro, Michael Rasmussen (Christina Watches Onfone) won in two hours 23.02 minutes. He was followed by Rene Jorgensen (Christina Watches) and Magnus Borreson (Team OneCo).

Stefan Schumacher (Chri-stina Watches) is the overall leader in this category.

The Tour resumes today with a 70km road race in St Paul’s Bay.
