“We will definitely return to Malta... and soon we hope!”

That was the declaration Spencer Brown, chairman of the European Boxing Federation (EBF), made immediately after the first Night of Boxing was over and done with at the end of January.

In fact, another Night of Boxing is planned for April 21. This was confirmed by local promoter Paul Borg who is again joining forces with the EBF to organise one more exciting event where the main protagonist will again be ‘the hit man’ – Malta’s Billy Corito.

“We will improve the level of his opponent in each future fight so he will need to improve accordingly,” was another of Brown’s statements before he left the island.

And so the next EBF nominated challenger to face Corito will be Davey ‘Boy’ Clarke, whose 27-fight record includes 20 wins and a draw while his losses came against top-level opponents, the likes of Mark Potter, Chris Bacon and John Lewis.

It is recognised that Clarke has more experience than the majority of the other EBF heavyweights. He is a composed fighter with knowledge of boxing most men could only wish for.

Undoubtedly building such a sturdy character is ever so natural when his career included fights against former world champion Enzo Macrenelli and former British champion Matt Skelton.

Corito crowned his January EBF baptism of fire by securing the Intercontinental Champion belt, a title he will be defending against Clarke.

Corito has now won eight consecutive fights.

In seven of them, he knocked out his opponents, six of whom in the second round and one in the first.

Further to the Corito-Clarke showdown, the Big Night of Boxing on April 21, again to be staged at the Sky Club, will also present six other local boxers who will challenge EBF fighters.

The European Boxing Federation is Great Britain’s and Europe’s largest semi-pro organisation.

“Our outstanding relationship with this entity is giving an upward thrust to boxing in Malta. In fact, besides the Corito-Clarke title encounter, two of the other six fights will be contested to decide Black Belt titles in their respective categories,” Borg said.

The main sponsors of the April Night of Boxing are RE/MAX Alliance Tigne and The Party Bus Malta.
