European notaries who wished to practice in Malta had to know how to be proficient in Maltese and English, the government said today.

European notaries could now work in the Malta after the European Court of Justice last year called on Malta and other EU member states to open up the notarial practice to all European citizens as was the case in almost all the other professions.

Malta changed the law in line with the ECJ ruling but in a bid to safeguard the national interest, it included the knowledge of reading and writing in Maltese and English as a requisite for a warrant.
