Church organisation Caritas gave ministers and parliamentary secretaries a detailed presentation about their proposal to increase the minimum wage, on the Prime Minister’s invitation.

Lawrence Gonzi told local councillors yesterday that during the Cabinet discussion local councils were identified as one possible source through which people could be helped to make “right decisions”.

Speaking during a swearing-in ceremony for councillors, Dr Gonzi said they could be instrumental to bringing subjects like “home economics” and “personal and social development” into communities.

They could also help spread messages from the Health Promotion Unit and help residents have a better lifestyle.

“Meanwhile, the government will examine in more detail the report of Caritas which will also be discussed in the Malta Council for Social and Economic Development,” Dr Gonzi said.

Dr Gonzi also thanked councillors and their families for their commitment to the residents and localities and urged them to continue working for the betterment of society.
