The General Secretary of the General Workers' Union, Tony Zarb has instituted libel proceedings against Vince Farrugia, Director-General of the GRTU, over comments made by the latter on a TVM programme.

Mr Zarb said that the comments by Mr Farrugia implied that he had manipulated the minutes of a meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD). Mr Zarb said he had been called a fascist and it was claimed that he had incited people to violence.
It had also been claimed that the GWU had instigated the throwing of a firework at Michael Mallia (a representative of the Employers' Association) and the GWU had instigated violence against Alphonse Farrugia and caused hell to Winston Zahra (Sr) and Winston Zahra (junior) as well as Joe Caruana Curran, another employers' representative.

These allegations, the GWU said in a statement, were made after it reported how Mr Farrugia had described some people having a precarious job as 'rats'.
