Late Thursday, Maltese professional driver and trainer Charles Degiorgio succeeded in winning one of the major events on the card at the Aby Racetrack, in Sweden.
The event was an autostart race held over a long distance of 2,640m.
Degiorgio finished first with Rolls Royce. This Swedish eight-year-old horse increased its pace in the last 500m and clinched first place from El Guerrouj (Peter Ingves) and Lexus Lavec (Stefan Soderkvist). Italian favourite Main Kronos (Ake Svanstedt) was fourth.
Rolls Royce clocked an im-pressive average time of 1.14.6” per kilometre.
Ten horses took part in the race which was screened live on one of the Swedish TV sports channels with the commenta-tors hailing Degiorgio as a top driver from Malta.
Degiorgio said the victory at Aby gives him renewed confidence and motivation for his future commitments in Swe-den, where he is currently based.
“We really had a great race, no doubt. However, I was also impressed by the time registered by Rolls Royce and its spurt in the straight for home,” he said.
In Sweden, Degiorgio is also assisted by the Malta Tourism Authority and Kunsill Malti għall-iSport.
