The MUMN has suspended industrial action it had planned to take at operating theatres in Mater Dei Hospital as from Monday.

The union said industrial action has been suspended for a month to give time for new operational protocols agreed with the health ministry.

The MUMN is complaining about pressures on nurses leading to unsafe work practices.

It said the new theatre polices were agreed after the Health Department acknowledged the need of safe practice and health and safety issues within the operating theatres.

"Now it will be up to Mater Dei Management to supervise that such policy document is adhered to by all consultants, doctors and nurses. The introduction of such policies will start next week and MUMN will be reviewing the changes with the theatre nurses in four weeks time."

The union warned it would reconsider action in four weeks time if the agreement is not fully implemented or disciplinary actions is not taken by the Management of Mater Dei Hospital when professional staff do not comply to the new protocols.
