Contrary to all predictions, Gudja beat 10-man Gżira with the incredible score of 6-1, an upset which did not go down well with the Maroons supporters who made their anger very clear at the end of the match.

Despite the loss, Gżira remain at the top of the standings. Gudja are now third on 35 points, five points fewer than second-placed Mellieħa.

As the scoreline clearly indi-cates, Gudja were the better team, dominating possession and dictating play all along.

Gudja took the lead on 15 minutes when William Camenzuli’s free-kick was blocked but in dashed Emerson Vella to hit home from the rebound.

Another Camenzuli free-kick led to Gudja’s second goal. This time Peter Paul Sammut rose above everyone to plant a looping header into the corner of the net from Camenzuli’s delivery.

Gżira pulled one back on 39 minutes from a penalty after Gjepali’s foul on Anthony Ewurun. From the spot, Ewurun didn’t miss.

There was a heated argument involving players and club officials midway through the second half and police officers had to intervene to calm the situation.

Ewurun was sent off, leaving Gżira with an uphill struggle.

Dean Agius soon made it 3-1 with a powerful grounder and 15 minutes from time, Pace caught Thomas’s foot in the box and from the penalty captain Camenzuli beat Simon Agius.

Substitute Timothy John Thomas hammered the last nails in Gżira’s coffin with a brace late on. He first scored with a perfect header from a cross by Agius and then hit first-time from another Agius service much to the delight of Gudja’s fans.
