A man died and another was seriously injured in a shooting in Marsascala last night.

A third man also sustained injuries in what appears to have been a fire fight. His injuries are not believed to be serious. He was taken to hospital and questioned by police.

The three men are known to the police.

Unofficial sources said last night the dead man was Kevin Gatt.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. in a garage complex beneath a block of flats in a residential neighbourhood in Ġużeppi Lanzon Street. Neighbours told The Times they heard loud shots.

Sources said one of the injured men owned a garage in the complex and his red Pajero was seen parked on the road just outside.

The police said that when officers arrived at the scene a person who appeared to be injured informed them that somebody had shot at him from inside a vehicle. He also indicated the place to the police.

The police said the incident occured in a basement three floors below street level where a number of garages are situated.

They said that at the spot indicated by the injured person they found three vehicles which could have been involved in the incident.

In one of the vehicles, a Hyundai, were two men. One of them appeared to be dead and the other grievously injured.

In fact, one of the men was certified dead at the scene and the other was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance.

The injured person who had spoken to the police was also taken to hospital for treatment.

Forensic police were at the scene and duty Magistrate Neville Camilleri held an on-site inquiry. A number of court experts, including ballistic expert, former army commander Brigadier Maurice Calleja, were appointed to assist the investigation.
