One of the most successful local councils is certainly that of Mellieħa. Its administration covers the vast northern area of rural Malta, including Ċirkewwa, Selmun and Manikata. Robert Cutajar, the indefatigable mayor has shown talent, initiative and leadership. The elected members are dedicated people whose dominant interest is the Mellieħa community. They have worked hard to fulfil infrastructural projects.

The family park in the limits of Selmun (picture) will eventually provide healthy relaxation in the enjoyment of the many sports facilities. These are all enclosed in one complex surrounded by a protective rubble wall.

The council has renovated the equipment of the existing playing field, a heaven for both parents and children. From a specially constructed belveder balcony, the view of Mellieħa Bay is spectacular: it certainly deserved the award of “blue flag status”.

Another project is that at Misraħ Żjara Tal-Papa where the square will be turned into a pedestrian zone enhanced by an appropriate lighting system. An expensive undertaking will help regenerate the zones of Selmun and Mġieba the financial help of the EU will make this possible.

Other services will include the laying of tarmac on arterial roads, while a day and night shelter for senior citizens as well as language and IT courses are certainly of social benefit to the community.

The annual organisation of the popular outdoor activities known as Milied Mellieħi and Iljieli Melliħin demand months of preparation, hard work and the cooperation of council and volunteers.

These manifestations draw the participation of the community, crowds of visitors including tourists. They generate economic benefits and leisurely entertainment. These activities do not delineate Mellieħa as an exceptional town for others to imitate. They do more than that. They provide opportunities that draw out the artistic initiatives and talents of young people.

Just like his predecessors, the mayor’s leadership has helped to change the face of Mellieħa.
